Our job is to create more opportunities for children to practise reading. And here’s how we do it…
We provide volunteers to assist children with reading practice during school hours.
We coordinate and deliver this service for free, with maximum flexibility and minimal disruption for teachers and students.
We recruit, train and manage volunteers according to the school's specific requirements, with the school nominating the time, days and the students who need assistance.
Our Reading Helpers attend school regularly and we have casuals on standby to ensure continuity and consistency for the children.
RFA volunteers are members of the local community who are committed and passionate about children's education. They are trained to provide excellent and seamless support to teachers and school staff.
At the school's discretion, we engage with parents and carers to involve them in the program, ideally bringing in extra volunteers only where numbers aren't met.
All RFA volunteers hold a current WWCC.
RFA donates books to disadvantaged children responding to requests from schools, charities, and community associations.
We prioritise communities living in remote regional areas and Aboriginal organisations.
We also provide schools with an ICSEA value lower than 1,000 with books for library and classroom use.
The majority of our books are preloved but in great condition. They are checked an curated by our volunteers before distribution.
RFA reaches out to small regional communities to hold regular story time sessions for preschoolers and parents, to instill a love of reading and encourage parents and carers to read with and to their children at home.

We love working in these fabulous schools and supporting the efforts they are making to improve the literacy skills of their students.
“The school has had a positive experience through this partnership with the students involved gaining enhanced confidence in their reading skills.”
